Finding activities

This guide covers how to search the directory, set the area you are looking in, and read what an activity card tells you. It is for any family browsing Famlo, whether or not you have signed in.

Where activities live​

There are two kinds of page, and they answer different questions.

  • /activities is the landing page. It shows rows of activities near you and a grid of links to browse by state. It does not read filters.
  • /s/activities is where results live. Every search, filter and map movement lands here, and every combination is a real address you can bookmark or share.

You reach the results page by using the search pill, opening Filters, or moving the map. You never have to type the address yourself.

Location pages sit under the state and city:

  • /activities/florida — everything in one state
  • /activities/florida/fort-myers — everything in one city
  • /activities/florida/fort-myers/nature-outdoors — one category within a city

These are good links to share with other families in your area.

Set the area you are searching​

Famlo picks a starting area for you. It uses the map viewport carried in the address if there is one, then a location handed over from a link, then your approximate location from your connection.

Famlo does not ask your browser for your location when the page loads. You have to ask for that yourself.

  1. Find the location control beside the first row of activities. It reads Change when Famlo has already placed you, or Set location when it has not.
  2. Click it. A small panel opens.
  3. Type into Search a city or ZIP and pick a place from the list, or click Use my current location to let your browser answer.
  4. If you chose Use my current location, your browser asks permission. The panel reports progress, and the page reloads once it has an answer.

On the results page you can also just move the map. Panning and zooming rewrites the results underneath it.

If you decline the browser permission, nothing breaks. Searching a city or ZIP gives you exactly the same results.

Filter the results​

All filtering lives in one panel.

  1. Click Filters in the header. On a phone this is the sliders icon.
  2. Set any of the following:
    • Search — free text, matched against activity titles and descriptions
    • Category — one category at a time, or Any
    • Ages — one or more age bands: Preschool, Elementary, Middle, High
    • Format — Any, In person, or Virtual
    • On or after — a date; activities starting before it drop out
  3. Click Show results.

A Selected block at the top of the panel lists what is currently applied. Clear all removes every filter at once. When filters are active, the Filters button carries a count badge.

Categories with nothing nearby are hidden, and the ones that remain show how many activities match. So the menu you see is a real menu for the area you are looking at, not a fixed list.

There is no free-or-paid filter on activities. Price is shown on every card, so you can see it as you scan. The Membership filter that offers Free to join and Paid applies to organizations, not activities.

Read an activity card​

Each card carries only what it can state as fact:

  • A Virtual badge, in the top-left of the photo, on online activities
  • A heart, in the top-right, to save the activity
  • The activity title
  • The organization running it
  • The day and start time
  • The distance from the area you are searching
  • A repeat line — "Repeats weekly", "Repeats every 2 weeks" or "Repeats monthly" — on a recurring series
  • The price, or Free. A priced activity reads as an amount followed by per session

Above the grid, a note reads Prices include all fees, and the heading counts what matched.

Cards do not show how many people are attending, how full an activity is, or whether it is happening today. To find out whether places are left, open the activity.

Use the map​

The map beside the results draws a pin for every activity in view, not just the ones on the page you are reading.

  • One pin stands for one location, and carries a count when several activities share it.
  • Click a pin to see what is there. The popup lists up to five, then offers See everything here to search that spot properly.
  • The popup respects the filters you already set, so it never shows you something the list would have hidden.
  • Panning or zooming re-runs the search for the new viewport.

On a phone the map sits behind the results. Scroll down and a Map pill appears; tap it to bring the map full-screen, and tap the strip of results at the bottom to come back.

Page through the results​

Results are paginated, twenty-four to a page. Under the grid you get numbered page links with arrows either side.

These are ordinary links, so you can open a page in a new tab, bookmark it, or send it to somebody. Results do not load as you scroll.

Save an activity for later​

Click the heart on any card, or on the activity itself, to save it. Saved activities collect under Saved & watchlist in your account menu.

Troubleshooting​

I only see activities in the wrong town. Famlo placed you from your connection, which can be a county out on mobile data or a VPN. Use Change beside the first row, then Search a city or ZIP.

The results are empty. The empty state suggests panning the map, picking a different city, or relaxing filters. Start with Clear all in the Filters panel, then narrow again one filter at a time.

A category I expected is missing from the Filters panel. Categories with nothing in the current viewport are hidden. Zoom out or pick a wider area and it comes back.

The map shows a pin but the list does not show that activity. The map draws every pin in the viewport; the list shows one page at a time. Click the pin, or go to the next page.

I clicked Use my current location and nothing happened. Your browser may have refused the permission, or refused it silently from an earlier visit. The panel reports what it heard. Searching a city or ZIP works regardless.
