Paying for a class over time
Some classes let you spread the price over monthly card payments instead of paying it all at checkout. Others are priced by the month to begin with. Either way, you choose it at checkout. Your payments, your card and your place in the class are in Account settings › Memberships.
Paying over time is offered only where the organization has turned it on for that class. If you don't see it at checkout, the class is paid all at once.
Choose monthly payments at checkout
When a class offers a payment plan, step 2 of checkout (Who pays for each spot?) has a How you'd like to pay choice:
- All at once: the whole price today.
- [N] monthly payments, for example 4 monthly payments: "The first today, then one a month — every one finished before the last class." Once the price is worked out, this line shows each payment and its dates.
To pay over time:
- Go through checkout as usual, then in How you'd like to pay, select the monthly payments option.
- Choose a saved card, or enter a new one under Card for every payment. A new card is saved to your account so each payment can be charged to it.
- Check the Paying over time box in the order summary. It shows what's Due today and the dates and amounts Later.
- Select Pay $X today to finish.
Your confirmation lists the class as In the plan, and Famlo emails you "You're enrolled in [class]" with a See your payments button.
How the payments work
- 2 to 6 equal payments. The organization sets the most it allows. Your last payment always falls before the class's last meeting, so a class that's already under way may offer fewer payments, or none.
- One a month, on the same day. The first is today.
- Card only. Step Up pays the whole price at once, so to use it, choose All at once.
- Reductions first. A promo code, a scholarship award from the organization, or account credit comes off the total, and what's left is split, so every payment is lower. If the total doesn't split evenly, the extra cents go on the first payment.
- A booking fee on every payment. Each payment carries its own booking fee, and the summary says so: "Each payment includes a $X booking fee." The order total at checkout is every payment added up. If the organization pays the booking fee itself, there's no fee line. What families pay explains the fee.
Classes priced by the month
Some classes have a monthly price, which you choose as the ticket in step 1 of checkout. There's no All at once option for these. Instead, a Paid monthly box explains how billing works:
- A monthly class with an end date: "$X a month, N payments", then when each payment is due.
- An ongoing monthly class: "$X a month", then "every month until you stop."
If the class hasn't started yet, the first payment is on the day it starts, not today, and the button reads Confirm — nothing due today. The same rules apply as for a payment plan: card only, a booking fee on each payment, and the card is saved for the payments to come.
Two limits apply to monthly prices. A monthly price can't share an order with another way to join, so check out each child separately if their tickets differ. A promo code can't be used on an ongoing monthly price.
This page doesn't cover programs (enrollment by days of the week, with notice). See Enrolling in a program.
See your plan
- Open Account settings and select Memberships (1).
- Under Classes you're paying over time, select the class (2).
The section appears only while you have a plan or monthly class. The plan page shows:
- The total and the number of payments, for example "$1,192.04 in 4 payments", or "$X a month" for an ongoing monthly class. The total includes the booking fee on every payment.
- A status line, such as "Payment plan · 2 of 4 paid · next $298.01 on Oct 15". The next payment is the amount your card will be charged, booking fee included, so it matches the total above it.
- The card the payments go on, for example "Visa ending 4242".
- Update your card (1).
- Each child's place, with Cancel (2).
- See the class, which opens the activity page.
What the status line means
| Status line | What it means |
|---|---|
| Payment plan · 2 of 4 paid · next $X on [date] | On track. $X is the whole payment, booking fee included. Monthly in place of Payment plan means a monthly class, and an ongoing monthly class reads "$X a month". |
| … · checking your payment with Stripe | Your first payment is still being confirmed. |
| … · waiting for your bank to confirm the first payment | Your bank wants you to approve the first payment. |
| The [date] payment didn't go through · Stripe tries again [date] | A payment failed. Your place is safe. See the next section. |
| The [date] payment didn't go through · Stripe stopped retrying | The retries ran out. Update your card and pay, or contact the organization. |
| … · every payment made | All payments are made. |
| … · cancelled | The plan has ended. |
Change your card, or fix a failed payment
The card for a plan is changed on the plan's own page, not in Payment methods.
- Open the plan from Account settings › Memberships.
- Select Update your card. If a payment has failed, the button reads Update your card and pay.
- Enter the new card.
- If you have other plans or monthly classes, leave Use this card for my other payments too ticked to move them all to this card.
- Select Save card. After a failed payment you choose instead between Save card and pay $X now and Save card, try it next time.
When a payment fails, you keep your place. A failed payment never cancels a booking on its own. Stripe, the payment processor, tries your card again, and the status line shows the date of the next try. Famlo emails you once, from the organization: "Your [class] payment didn't go through." The email says your child keeps their spot, says when the card will be tried again, and links to Update your card.
If Stripe stops retrying, the card page says "Stripe stopped retrying this payment. Pay it below, or contact [organization]." You can still save a card and pay there, or message the organization.
Cancel one child, or the whole plan
Cancel from the plan page: select Cancel next to the child. The cancel screen shows what happens before you confirm with Cancel booking, or back out with Keep booking.
- Other children stay on the plan. The plan carries on for them, for less: "The plan keeps going for the other place, for less." The screen shows the new monthly amount and how many payments are left.
- Cancelling the last child ends the plan. "This ends the plan: no more payments are taken."
What comes back follows the organization's refund terms for the class, measured against what you've paid so far. The terms say how much of the whole price the organization keeps. If you've paid more than that, the difference comes back. If you've paid less, nothing comes back and nothing more is owed. Any account credit you used comes back as credit. The screen sums it up, for example "About $275 back to your card", or "Nothing comes back under these terms, and nothing more is owed."
If the organization cancels the class, your plan ends too and no more payments are taken. For refund rules in general, see Cancelling and refunds.
Troubleshooting
I don't see a monthly payments option at checkout. Either the organization hasn't offered a plan for this class, or the class is too close to its last meeting for even two payments. Also note that monthly payments are card only: if any spot in the order is paid with Step Up, choose All at once.
Checkout says the number of payments changed. The number of payments depends on today's date and the class's last meeting. Check the new amounts and pay again.
I updated my card in Payment methods, but the plan still uses the old one. A plan keeps its own card. Change it with Update your card on the plan's page.
My bank asked me to confirm the card, and now checkout says "Your card is saved. Press Pay to finish." Your card was saved, but the order didn't go through while you were with your bank. Select the pay button again to finish.
