Log home learning with Log a week

Log a week is a quick way to record the learning you do at home. You fill in hours per subject for Monday to Friday, select Save week, and Famlo adds the week to your child's school record. It's free, and you can do it for any child on your family account.

Open Log a week

You can get to the grid from three places:

  • Your child's school record: open Family, choose your child, then School record, and select Log a week at the top of the page.
  • Your Dashboard (Home on a phone): in the School year so far card, select Log this week next to a child who has no hours yet.
  • The Friday check-in, if you've turned it on. It opens that week's grid (see the Friday check-in below).

The grid opens on the current week. Use the arrows beside the title to go to the previous or next week.

Log a week of learning

  1. Open Log a week for your child.
  2. Type the hours for each subject and day into the grid (1). Leave a cell empty for no time.
  3. To add a subject that isn't on the grid, choose it from + Add subject (2) and fill in its hours in the same row.
  4. If this is a typical week, tick Make this Max's usual week (3), which shows your child's name. More on that below.
  5. Select Save week (4).

Famlo confirms with a message such as "Saved 10.25 hours to Max's record for the week of Oct 19." The Week column then shows each subject's total.

How the grid works

  • Hours go in quarter-hour steps: 0.25 is 15 minutes, 0.5 is half an hour.
  • A day can hold up to 12 hours for a subject.
  • The grid covers Monday to Friday only. For learning on a weekend, or anything that doesn't fit a week, use Add a course or activity on the school record.
  • The grid always has rows for Mathematics, English, Science, Social Studies and Fine Arts, plus any subject already on your child's record or in their usual week. A subject stays on the grid once it's on the record.
  • + Add subject lists the other standard subjects: Foreign Language, Physical Education, Health, Technology and Electives (whichever aren't on the grid yet). You can add one new subject each time you save.

What Save week adds to the record

Saving adds one line per subject to your child's school record, not one line per day. Each line:

  • is titled with the subject and the week, for example "Mathematics · week of Oct 19";
  • runs from that Monday to that Friday;
  • holds the week's total hours for the subject;
  • keeps the day-by-day split in its notes, for example "Mon 1 · Tue 1 · Thu 0.5".

Saving the same week again updates those lines instead of adding new ones. If you take a subject back to zero and save, its line for that week is removed.

Log a week only changes its own lines. Courses you added one at a time with Add a course or activity, and the lines Famlo fills in from your bookings, are never changed by it.

tip

To change a week's hours, reopen the week and save it again rather than editing the line on the record. Saving rewrites the week's lines, including their titles and notes, so anything you typed into a week line's notes is replaced.

Classes booked on Famlo

If your child is booked into activities on Famlo that week, a Booked on Famlo row shows them under the day they happen. The legend reads "Booked on Famlo · reaches the record on its own".

You can't type in this row, and you don't need to. Famlo adds those classes to the school record by itself, using the organization's attendance or, for a paid booking, the class schedule. Don't add their hours to the grid as well, or they'll be counted twice.

Your child's usual week

If your weeks follow a steady pattern, save one as your child's usual week. After that, every week with nothing saved yet starts filled in from it.

  • Tick Make this Max's usual week (with your child's name) before you select Save week. The hours you're saving become the usual week.
  • The card beside the grid, Max's usual week, lists each subject and its hours a week.
  • Filled-in cells have a dashed border and the note "Suggested · saved when you save". They aren't on the record until you select Save week.
  • To change the usual week, tick the box again on a week that looks the way you want and save.

Copy last week

If last week is saved, a Copy last week button appears next to the arrows. It fills the grid with last week's hours but doesn't save them: "Filled in from last week. Change anything, then save." Check the hours, then select Save week.

The Friday check-in

The Friday check-in is a reminder to confirm your child's week. It's off until you turn it on, separately for each child.

  • When: Fridays at 3 p.m. Eastern time.
  • What it says: "Confirm Max's week. Filled in from Max's usual week. One tap if it went as planned." (with your child's name)
  • Where it arrives: in Messages on Famlo (the bell at the top of the page on a computer). It isn't sent by email.
  • Skipped if you've already saved that week.

Selecting it opens that week's grid, filled in from the usual week, so if the week went as planned you only need to select Save week. It works best once you've saved a usual week; without one, the grid opens empty.

Turn it on from Log a week

  1. Open Log a week for your child.
  2. In the Friday check-in card, tick Remind me on Fridays.
  3. Select Save week. The setting is saved with the week.

To turn it off here, untick the box and select Save week again.

Turn it on or off in Notifications

  1. Open the avatar menu, then Account settings.
  2. Select Notifications.
  3. Under Weekly check-ins, select Turn on or Turn off next to your child's name.

The row then reads "Reminder on Fridays" or "Off". Changing it here never changes any hours.

Check-ins follow your Event reminders settings on the same page. If you've turned off In-app for Event reminders, you won't see them in Messages.

Troubleshooting

The grid opens full of hours I didn't type. That week is filled in from your child's usual week (dashed cells) or from Copy last week. Nothing is saved until you select Save week, so change or clear any cell first. To stop empty weeks filling in, clear every cell, tick Make this Max's usual week and select Save week: the usual week is then empty.

I saved a week and now I see two lines for the same subject. This can happen if a week line was renamed on the record. Log a week finds its lines by their titles, so it added a new one. Remove the extra line on the school record.

I didn't get a Friday check-in. Check that it's on for that child under Notifications › Weekly check-ins, and that In-app is ticked for Event reminders. No check-in is sent for a week you've already saved.

A class we booked doesn't show in the Booked on Famlo row. The row is there to help you see the week at a glance and may not list every class. Whether or not a class shows here, Famlo adds it to the school record on its own: the day after attendance is taken or, for a paid booking, the day after a meeting has passed.
