How Do I Find Homeschool Co-ops Near Me?

Famlo lists co-ops, learning pods, micro-schools, tutors, libraries and more on one map. This guide covers setting the area you are searching, narrowing it with the filters that actually exist, and reading a listing before you commit to anything.

Quick Answer​

Open the organization directory at famlo.co/places, set the area you are looking in, then open Filters and narrow by Category, Organization type, Membership or a keyword. The list and the map cover the same area, so panning the map is how you change where you are searching.

Where organizations are listed​

Two kinds of page, answering different questions.

  • /places is the landing page. It shows rows near you and links to browse by state. It does not read filters.
  • /s/places is where results live. The search pill, the Filters panel and the map all land there.

You never have to type either address. Searching or filtering takes you to the results page on its own.

The eighteen kinds of organization​

Every listing on Famlo is one of eighteen types. The type shapes the listing and is the first thing in its address.

So a co-op called Riverbend lives at famlo.co/co-op/riverbend, and a micro-school sits under famlo.co/micro-school/.... An organization can also claim a short handle, which works as a second address: famlo.co/@riverbend.

Step 1: Set the area you are searching​

Famlo picks a starting area for you. It uses the map viewport carried in the address if there is one, then a location handed over from a link, then your approximate location from your connection.

Famlo does not ask your browser for your location when the page loads. Asking your browser is a button you press yourself, and declining it breaks nothing — typing a city or ZIP gives the same results. The location control works the same way it does on the activity directory, described in Finding activities.

On the results page you can also just move the map. Panning and zooming rewrites the results underneath it.

Step 2: Narrow the list with Filters​

All filtering lives in one panel.

  1. Click Filters.
  2. Set any of:
    • Category — grouped by things like academic focus and faith affiliation; pick as many as you like
    • Organization type — any of the eighteen above, multi-select
    • Membership — Any, Free to join, or Paid
    • Search — free text against the organization's name
  3. Click Show results.

Options with nothing in the area you are looking at are hidden, and the rest carry counts. So the menu you see is a real menu for the area on screen, not a fixed list. Clear all resets the panel.

:::note What there is no filter for There is no faith filter, no academic-focus filter, no age filter and no distance radius. Faith affiliation and educational approach are Category tags, so a faith-based co-op or a classical co-op is found by ticking the matching category. Distance is the map: pan or zoom to change the area you are searching. :::

Step 3: Read the results​

Results are paginated, twenty-four to a page, with numbered page links underneath. They are ordinary links, so you can bookmark a page or send it to another family.

Each card shows the organization's name, its location and one summary line. That line is:

  • its dues price, if it charges
  • Free to join, if it runs memberships without charging
  • a count of upcoming activities, if it has no membership system
  • a member count, if it has nothing scheduled either

The map beside the results covers the same area as the list, so moving one changes the other.

Step 4: Read a listing before you join​

A listing has a tab row under its header. Which tabs appear depends on what the organization has:

  • Its schedule, named for the type of organization — Classes for a co-op, a micro-school, a tutor, an enrichment program or a studio; Events for a library, an attraction, a venue, a business, a community or a meetup; Schedule for everything else
  • Staff — who runs it and who teaches there
  • About — the description, and the section the listing opens on
  • Photos — its album, plus photos from its activities
  • Where we meet — jumps to the map, on organizations with a real address

In the header you get Follow and, where the organization accepts questions, Message. Follow is not joining. It tells Famlo you want to hear when this organization posts something new, and gives you no member access.

Two settings decide what you can see and how you get in​

These are separate settings, and mixing them up is the usual reason a listing surprises people. An organization sets both.

Visibility answers "is this listed, and is member content gated":

The two combine freely. A co-op can sit in the directory with a full public page and still screen everyone who applies — that is Open visibility with an Approval required join policy, and it is a common setup.

On a Closed listing you still see the shape of the programme. A panel counts the members-only sessions, names some of them, and says when they run and what ages they suit. Times, teachers and fees are what membership buys.

Step 5: Join, or keep it for later​

What you see depends on how the organization is set up.

  • Join followed by the organization's name makes you a member immediately.
  • Request to join opens a request page with the organization's rules and up to three free-text questions. Organizers review it and you hear back.
  • An organization that charges dues uses the same request flow with a card step. Your card is saved, not charged, until organizers approve you.

Tips​

  • Widen the map before you narrow the filters. An empty result usually means the viewport is too tight, not that nothing exists.
  • Search by name, filter by everything else. The Search box matches the organization's name, so use Category and Organization type for what a group is about.
  • Check both directories. An organization you cannot find may still be running activities you can see under Finding activities.
  • Set a location alert for the areas you care about, so you hear when something new is published. See Saved activities and alerts.
  • Read the summary line. Free to join, a dues price, or a count of upcoming activities tells you what kind of commitment you are looking at.

Troubleshooting​

I only see organizations in the wrong town. Famlo placed you from your connection, which can be a county out on mobile data or a VPN. Set the location yourself, or move the map.

The results are empty. Start with Clear all in the Filters panel, then add one filter back at a time. If it is still empty, zoom out.

A category I expected is missing from the panel. Categories with nothing in the current viewport are hidden. Widen the area and it comes back.

I searched for a co-op I know exists and found nothing. It may have Hidden visibility, which keeps it out of every listing. Ask them for a direct link or an invitation. It may also simply be outside the map viewport.

I can see a co-op but not its class times. It has Closed visibility. The panel tells you how many members-only sessions there are; times, teachers and fees appear once you are a member.

There is no join button on the listing. The organization is invite-only, or it is closing down. A listing scheduled to leave Famlo reads "Not accepting new members" with the date.

I clicked the location button and nothing happened. Your browser may have refused the permission, sometimes silently from an earlier visit. Searching a city or ZIP works regardless.
