Edit your website on the page
The website editor shows your real site and lets you change it where you see it: click a heading to retype it, click a photo to replace it, click a button to change where it goes. Everything you do saves to a draft as you go, and families keep seeing your published site until you publish. You need the Website plan and School settings set to Edit settings, which Owners and Co-leaders have.
Open the editor
There are three ways in:
- In your console, open Website and select Edit your website. It's on every Website tab.
- On Website › Pages, select a page's name to open the editor on that page.
- On your live site, select Edit this page (see Edit from your live site).
To leave, select the red Famlo mark at the top left (Done on a phone). You go back to Website › Pages. Your draft is kept.
Find your way around
The editor has four parts:
- The top bar. The page switcher (1) shows the page you're on. Open it to jump to another page, or for Page settings… and Add page. The rest of the bar holds the preview sizes, undo and redo, the save status, Preview draft, View live page, History and Publish.
- The left side (2). Under Pages are all your pages, with the sections of the page you're on listed beneath it, top to bottom. Select a section's name to jump to it. Under Site are Theme and Site settings (Website › Details), which open those console tabs, and at the foot Help & shortcuts.
- The page (3). Your site as families will see it once you publish, drawn from your draft. The strip above it says "Editing a draft · families see the published site".
- The panel (4). It opens on the right when you select something, and shows that thing's settings. Close it with the ×.
On a phone, the editor has no left side: use the page switcher to move between pages. Tapping something opens its panel from the bottom of the screen, and you type there rather than on the page.
Preview sizes
The three buttons in the middle of the top bar, Desktop, Tablet and Phone, redraw the page at that width so you can check how it looks on each. They don't change your site.
Undo and redo
Use the arrows in the top bar, or press ⌘Z to undo and ⌘⇧Z to redo (Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z on Windows). While you're typing in a box, those keys undo your typing instead. Undo only covers what you did in this browser tab since you opened it; reloading the page clears it. To go back further, restore an older version from History (see Publish, schedule and restore versions).
Change words, photos and buttons
Click any text, photo or button on the page to change it.
- A line of text, such as a heading or a button's words: type straight on the page. A counter shows how many characters you've used. Press Enter (or click elsewhere) when you're done, or Esc to put the line back as it was.
- A paragraph: clicking it opens the section's panel, where you type in the box.
- Emphasized words: in many headings, putting *asterisks* around a word makes it stand out, for example in your accent color. While you edit such a heading, Emphasize word does the same for the words you've selected.
- A photo: select Replace or Crop to open the photo panel. See Sections you can add for photo options and upload limits.
- A button: opens the button panel. See Buttons and links.
The header, footer and announcement bar are on every page, so they aren't changed here. Clicking them tells you where they are changed: your logo and colors on Website › Theme and Logo & icon, the announcement bar, contact details and footer in Site settings (Website › Details). Those tabs save straight to your live site, not to the draft. See Your site's look. Your menu is made from your pages; see Pages, your menu, and who can see each page.
Your Classes page and your teachers page are filled in by Famlo, from your classes and from People. Change what's on them there. In the editor you can rename them or hide them from the menu, and on the Classes page choose how class cards and filters look. See How classes show on your site.
Work with sections
Each page is a stack of sections: a welcome, a heading and text, a photo gallery, your classes, questions and answers, and so on. For the full list, see Sections you can add.
When you select a section, a toolbar (1) appears on it and its panel opens with two tabs (2):
- Content: the section's words, photos, list items and choices.
- Style: Layout (only the layouts your look draws), Background (Automatic, Page, Soft, Dark or Accent, all from your look's colors), Space around, Hide on phones, Link name and, where it applies, Emphasized words.
Add a section
- Point between two sections and select the plus button that appears, or the plus button under the section you have selected. On an empty page, select Add a section.
- Find the section you want. Browse by group, or type in Search sections. The previews use your look.
- Select it, then select Add section.
The new section goes in where you chose and is selected, ready to fill in. A section that a page can only have one of, such as the welcome, shows "One per page" once the page has it.
Move, copy or delete a section
- Select the section.
- On its toolbar, select Move up or Move down (the arrows), Duplicate, or Delete (the bin).
- If you chose Delete, confirm with Delete section, or select Keep it.
You can also drag a section by its handle in the list on the left, or select the handle and use the arrow keys. The ⋯ menu at the top of the section's panel has the same actions.
A deleted section comes off the page when you publish. Before then, undo brings it back. After you publish, you can bring it back by restoring an older version from History.
Buttons and links
Select a button on the page to open its panel. Button text is its words, and Goes to shows where it leads. Select Change (or Choose if it doesn't go anywhere yet) to pick a destination.
- Select the button on the page.
- In its panel, select Change or Choose.
- Pick the kind of destination (1): Page on your site, A class, A teacher, A resource, Phone number, Email or Outside link. You can also type in Search pages, classes, teachers….
- Select the destination, or type the phone number, email address or web address.
- Select Done (2).
Some things to know:
- Link to things, not addresses. When you choose a page, class or teacher from the list, the button keeps working if that page is renamed or the class moves. Use Outside link only for other websites. It needs the full address, starting https://.
- Link to a section. Give a section a Link name on its Style tab. It then shows in the list under its page, so a button can jump straight to it.
- Phone number lets families tap to call you. Email opens their email, addressed to you.
- Remove link clears the destination. A button with nowhere to go is hidden from your site.
- On the welcome section, a button left blank says your look's own words (such as "See upcoming classes") and goes to your classes.
- Your look decides how buttons look.
Saving, and editing with others
There's no Save button. Changes save a moment after you stop typing. The status beside the undo arrows tells you where your draft stands. On narrower screens it's a colored dot; point at it to see the words.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Saving… | Your latest change is on its way. |
| Saved · draft | Saved in your draft. Families don't see it until you publish. |
| Up to date | Your draft matches your live site. Publish is grayed out. |
| Not saved · Retry | The editor couldn't reach Famlo. It tries again by itself; select Retry to try now. |
| Scheduled · Mon, Oct 5, 7:00 AM | Your changes are set to publish at that time. |
Your organization has one shared draft, so everyone who edits the site works on the same one. When someone else has the editor open, the status adds "Sam is editing too" (with their name). If you both change the same thing, the later change wins and you see "Updated with Sam's changes." If someone changes a page you're rearranging, the editor shows "Someone else just changed this page. Showing their changes." Make your change again.
Preview your draft
Select Preview draft to open the page you're on in a new tab, just as families will see it once you publish, with the note "Preview of your draft · families still see the published site". Links in the preview don't go anywhere. Families can't see the preview.
View live page opens the published version of the page, as families see it now. It shows only when the page is published and your site has a web address.
When you're happy with the draft, select Publish. See Publish, schedule and restore versions.
Edit from your live site
When you're signed in on your own website, a round Edit this page button appears in the bottom right corner of its pages. Only people who can edit your site see it; families never do.
| On this page of your site | Edit this page opens |
|---|---|
| Your homepage or a page you made | The editor, on that page |
| Classes | The editor's Classes page, with your card and filter settings |
| A single class | That class in Classes, in your console |
| Your teachers page | People, in your console |
| Any other page | Website › Pages, in your console |
Your Parent portal on the site also shows a bar for you and your team: "You run this website. Only you and your team see this bar." with Edit your website and a link to your console.
Troubleshooting
The editor says "You were signed out". Your Famlo session ended. Sign in again in a new tab, then come back and select Try again. If a change didn't save, the box shows it so you can copy it.
The editor says "Your site was just published". Someone else on your team published while you were editing. Select Reload to carry on from the published version. Any change that didn't save is shown so you can copy it.
A note says some things "changed outside the editor since your draft started". Someone changed a setting such as your colors or contact details on a Website tab while a draft was open. Your draft keeps its own version of those things. Check them before you publish.
Publish is grayed out. There's nothing new to publish: your draft matches your live site.
I can't find View live page. The page hasn't been published yet, or your site doesn't have a web address yet. See Connect your own domain.
I don't see Edit this page on my site. Sign in on your website (not only on famlo.co) with the account you use to run your organization. Your role needs School settings set to Edit settings.
