Spanish, weather, branded emails and link previews

Your website comes with a few extras. You can write Spanish versions of your pages. Weather forecasts show beside in-person classes. Some emails to families come in your site's look and your organization's name. And shared links get their own preview picture. You need the Website plan, and School settings set to Edit settings to change anything here. Owners and Co-leaders have that.

Only Spanish needs you to do something. The other three happen on their own.

Offer your site in Spanish

Spanish is off until you turn it on. Famlo doesn't translate anything for you. You type the Spanish yourself, field by field, in the website editor.

Write the Spanish

  1. Open Website, then select Edit your website.
  2. In the top bar, select ES (1). A yellow note says "Families see your Spanish on your homepage and your own pages. Class listings stay in English for now."
  3. Click any text on the page. A Spanish panel opens for that section. Each field shows the English, marked EN, above a box that says "Write it in Spanish".
  4. Type the Spanish in the box (2). The panel counts your progress, for example "1 of 3 written".
  5. Repeat for each section. In the list of pages on the left, each page shows its progress, for example "Spanish: 12 of 45".
The website editor in Spanish mode with ES as 1, the Spanish box for the welcome headline as 2 and the Spanish for families switch as 3

Each field shows one of three labels:

LabelWhat it means
MissingNo Spanish yet. Families see the English.
WrittenYour Spanish is saved.
Needs review"The English changed since this was written." Families still see your older Spanish until you update it.

Some things to know while you work in Spanish:

  • Layout and photos change in English only. As the note says, "Switch to English to change layout or photos." Select EN to go back.
  • Page names. The menu shows each page's Spanish name once you write it. Open the page menu at the top left and choose Page settings to write it.
  • Words on every page. Your announcement bar and opening hours have their own Spanish panel, headed "Español · Every page". Click the announcement bar or the footer to open it.
  • On a phone, open the page menu and choose Edit in Spanish instead of ES.

Turn Spanish on for families

  1. In the editor, write the Spanish for at least the first section of your homepage. Until you do, the editor won't turn Spanish on. It says "Write the Spanish for your homepage's first section first".
  2. In the left panel, under Site, turn on Spanish for families (3).
  3. Select Publish. Like any edit, the switch is a draft until you publish.

To turn Spanish off, turn off the switch and publish again. Everything you've written is kept.

Once Spanish is on, the Website page's checklist adds "Spanish written for every published page". If a page still needs Spanish, it says which one, for example "Write the Spanish for About".

What families see

  • Your homepage in Spanish at /es, and each of your own pages at /es/ plus the page's address. For example, www.sunnysidelearning.example/es.
  • An EN | ES switch in your site's header, on pages that have a Spanish version.
  • English wherever a field has no Spanish yet.

What stays in English

Famlo builds some parts of your site from your classes, teachers and families. Those stay in English for now:

  • The Classes and Teachers pages, and each class page.
  • Sections that list classes, teachers or testimonials. The Spanish panel for those sections says "What this section lists comes from your classes, teachers and families, and stays in English for now."
  • Contact, checkout and the Parent portal.

Weather on your classes

Your site shows the weather forecast beside in-person classes, automatically. A class gets a forecast when:

  • it's in person (or both in person and online),
  • it has a place on the map,
  • it starts in the next 7 days, and
  • it's in the United States. Forecasts come from the US National Weather Service.

Families see a short line such as "Forecast: Sunny · 20% rain" on class cards, on class pages and in their Parent portal bookings. Forecasts are checked every hour. Sometimes a forecast isn't available, and the class simply shows none.

Your day-before reminder emails can carry the forecast too, when they're sent in your site's look (see the next section). The subject then reads like "Tomorrow at 9 AM: Robotics Club (84° and sunny)".

Hide the weather on class cards

The forecast on class cards is the Weather field. It's on by default.

  1. Open Website, then select Edit your website.
  2. Open your Classes page (or Home, for the classes on your homepage), then the Cards tab.
  3. Under On each card, untick Weather.
  4. Select Publish.

The panel explains the field: "Weather is the forecast for in-person classes this week." For more about cards, see How classes show on your site.

Emails in your site's look

Some emails to families can come in your website's look instead of Famlo's. They use your logo, your colors and your contact details, and they're sent in your organization's name. Their buttons take families to your own website.

Which emails

EmailWhen it's in your site's lookIts button
Booking confirmationWhen the family booked on your website. A family who booked on famlo.co gets Famlo's usual email.View your booking, which opens Bookings in the Parent portal

What they need

There's no switch to turn these on. They start by themselves once both of these are true:

  • Your own domain is connected. See Connect your own domain.
  • Your Website plan is active. If the plan ends or a payment fails, your site takes a short break. Booking confirmations, reminders and spot alerts then go back to Famlo's look until the plan is active again.

Until then, families get Famlo's usual emails, so nothing is missed.

Who it's from, and where replies go

  • The sender name is your organization's name. The address it's sent from is Famlo's.
  • Your contact details from Website › Details show at the foot of each email, above a "Powered by Famlo" line.
  • When a family replies to your team's answer to their question, the reply goes into that conversation in Messages, so your team sees it there.
  • When a family replies to any other of these emails, the reply goes to the Contact email in School settings › Identity › Contact. Without a contact email on file, replies go to Famlo instead, so add one.

Change how they look

The emails follow your site's settings:

  • Theme: your colors, and whether the text is a serif or sans-serif font.
  • Logo & icon: your logo's size, whether your name shows beside it, and Logo in emails, which sets where the logo sits in the email header.
  • Details: the contact details in the footer.

See Your site's look: theme, colors, logo and details.

note

A few other emails always come in your organization's name, whatever your setup. These include appointment confirmations, payment requests, shop purchase receipts, and answers to your website's contact form. Once you have a website, they use your site's look too.

When someone shares a link to your site, in a text message or on Facebook, for example, the link shows a preview picture. Famlo makes it automatically:

  • A page with a photo: the first photo on the page, with a white card holding your logo, the page's title and your organization's name.
  • A page without a photo: your site's accent color, with the title under your logo.
  • Your homepage: the title is your welcome section's headline.
  • Your Classes page: the photo of an upcoming class.
  • A class with a cover photo: the class's card, with your logo on it.
A link preview for a homepage with no photo: the headline Small classes, big curiosity and the organization's name on the site's accent color

The picture updates by itself when you change the page. Pages only members or signed-in families can see, and pages you haven't published, get no preview picture.

There's nothing to set. For a better preview, add a photo near the top of each page and upload your logo in Logo & icon.

Troubleshooting

Families still get emails in Famlo's look. Check that your domain shows as connected in Website › Domain, and that your Website plan is active. A booking confirmation uses your look only when the family booked on your website. Bookings made on famlo.co get Famlo's email.

The editor won't turn on Spanish for families. Write the Spanish for at least one field in the first section of your homepage, usually the welcome section. Then try the switch again.

I turned Spanish on, but /es doesn't work. The switch goes live only when you publish. Select Publish in the editor.

A class has no forecast. Forecasts only show for in-person classes with a place on the map, starting in the next 7 days, in the United States. Also check that Weather is ticked under On each card. Sometimes no forecast is available for a while.
