Location Alerts
Location alerts let you know when new groups or events are created near a specific city or area. Whether you are searching for a co-op, a meetup, or classes in a new neighborhood, location alerts save you from checking back manually. You set up a watch once, and Homeschool Hive emails you whenever something new matches your criteria.
How Location Alerts Work
When you create a location alert, you choose:
- A location -- the city or area you want to monitor.
- What to watch for -- new groups, new events, or both.
- A search radius -- how far from that location to look (between 5 and 100 miles; default is 25 miles).
Homeschool Hive then monitors that area and sends you an email whenever a matching group or event is created.
Location alerts expire after 90 days of inactivity. If no new matches are found in that window, the alert is automatically deactivated. You can always create a new one.
Creating a Location Alert
If You Are Logged In
- Browse to the Groups or Events page.
- Use the location search to find your desired area.
- When prompted, click Get Notified or Create Alert for that location.
- Choose whether you want to watch for Groups, Events, or Both.
- Adjust the radius if you want a wider or narrower search area.
- Click Create Alert.
Because you are already signed in, the alert activates immediately -- no email verification is needed.
If You Are Not Logged In
You can still set up location alerts without an account:
- Browse to the Groups or Events page.
- Search for a city or area.
- Click Get Notified when prompted.
- Choose what to watch for (groups, events, or both).
- Enter your email address.
- Click Create Alert.
- Check your inbox for a verification email from Homeschool Hive.
- Click the verification link in the email.
After clicking the link, you will see a confirmation page that reads "You're All Set!" along with the location and alert type you selected.
If you already have a Homeschool Hive account, consider logging in before creating alerts. Logged-in alerts activate instantly and are easier to manage from your account.
Verifying Your Email
If you created an alert without being logged in, you must verify your email before the alert becomes active.
- The verification link is sent to the email address you provided.
- The link can only be used once. If you click it a second time, you will see an "Invalid or Expired Link" message -- but your alert is already active.
- If you do not receive the email, check your spam or junk folder.
Verification Errors
If something goes wrong during verification, you may see one of these messages:
| Error | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Invalid or Expired Link | The link was already used or has expired. If you already verified, your alert is active. |
| Missing Verification Token | The link appears incomplete. Try clicking it again from your email. |
| Something Went Wrong | A server error occurred. Try again later or contact support. |
Setting Preferences
After creating an alert, you may be asked to share a few preferences to help Homeschool Hive send you more relevant matches:
- Children's age ranges -- for example, 0--4, 5--7, 8--10, 11--13, or 14--18.
- Interests -- subjects or activities your family enjoys.
- Preferred group type -- co-op, meetup, classes, or any.
- Travel radius preference -- 10, 25, or 50 miles.
These preferences are optional but help Homeschool Hive prioritize the most relevant alerts for your family.
Managing Your Alerts
If you are logged in, you can view and manage all of your active location alerts:
- Navigate to your account settings or the location alerts management area.
- You will see a list of your active watches, including:
- The location being monitored
- The alert type (groups, events, or both)
- The search radius
- How many matches have been found so far
- When the alert expires
Pausing and Resuming Alerts
You can temporarily pause an alert without deleting it:
- Pause -- stops email notifications while keeping the alert saved.
- Resume -- reactivates notifications.
This is useful if you are traveling or want to temporarily stop receiving emails for a particular area.
Deleting an Alert
To permanently remove a location alert:
- Find the alert in your list.
- Click Delete or the trash icon.
- Confirm the deletion.
Once deleted, the alert cannot be recovered. You would need to create a new one.
Unsubscribing from Alert Emails
Every alert email includes an Unsubscribe link at the bottom. Clicking it will deactivate that specific location alert. This is especially useful for alerts created without an account, where you may not have a management dashboard.
What Notifications Will I Receive?
When a new group or event is created within your watch radius:
- You receive an email notification describing the new group or event.
- The email includes a direct link to view the group or event on Homeschool Hive.
Location alerts send email notifications only. They do not trigger push notifications or in-app alerts.
