Homeschool Records Tool

The Homeschool Records Tool is a free page for each state at famlo.co/tools/homeschool-records. It shows what your state asks you to keep and gives you a log of courses and hours you can fill in and print. You don't need an account to use it. When you want to keep the log, save it to a free Famlo account and it moves into your child's school record.

Open your state's page

  1. Go to famlo.co/tools/homeschool-records. From the famlo.co header, open For families and select Homeschool records.
  2. Under Your state, choose your state. You can also pick it on the map or from the list of every state below it.
  3. Select Open [state]'s records, for example Open Georgia's records.

The same page is the Records tab of the State Homeschool Guides. To switch to another state from a state's page, select Change state, or use Nearby states in the side column.

What your state asks you to keep

The top of each state's page is a card headed "[State] requires". It covers:

RowWhat it shows
Days or hours of instructionThe days or hours the state sets, such as "180 days/year, 4.5 hours/day". If Famlo hasn't confirmed this for your state yet, it says "Not established here yet" and links to your state's guide, which has the full rules.
Compulsory school ageThe ages when school is required.
Notice of intentWhether you need to notify the state or district, and when.
Testing or evaluationWhether your child needs testing or an evaluation, and how often.
Teacher qualificationsShown only for states that set one.

Under the card are the law the summary comes from, the date it was last reviewed, and a link to the full requirements. It's a summary, not legal advice. Rules change, so check with your school district before you file anything.

The side column links to the other free tools for your state: Homeschooling in [state], Funding and ESAs in [state] and the Notice of intent letter where your state has one.

Keep a log in your browser

Your log sits under the requirements card. It's Saved in this browser only: nothing goes to Famlo until you choose to save it.

Georgia's records page: the requirements card, Your log with Student name, the entry row and Add highlighted, three entries, Preview this log, the watermarked log document, and the Save this to a free Famlo account box with Your email and Email me a code highlightedGeorgia's records page: the requirements card, Your log with Student name, the entry row and Add highlighted, three entries, Preview this log, the watermarked log document, and the Save this to a free Famlo account box with Your email and Email me a code highlighted
  1. Under Student name (1), type your child's name. It goes at the top of the printed log.
  2. Type a Course or activity, for example a class, a curriculum you use at home, books or sport.
  3. Optionally, type a Provider, or at home and the Hours. Half hours are fine.
  4. Select Add (2).

Repeat for each course or activity. Each entry appears in the list with its hours, and Total hours and Entries update as you go. To take an entry out, select Remove next to it.

Keep these in mind:

  • Each state's page keeps its own log. Your log is on the state's page where you made it.
  • The log stays in the browser and on the device you used. It isn't on your other devices.
  • Clearing your browser's site data deletes it. In a private window it lasts only for that visit.

To keep the log safe for longer, save it to a free account (next section).

Select Preview this log (3) to open your browser's print window. From there you can print the log or save it as a PDF.

The printed log is headed with your child's name and "Log of educational activities" with your state's name. It lists each activity, its provider or materials and its hours, with a total and a line for the supervising parent to sign and date.

Without an account, the log carries a PREVIEW watermark, on screen and on paper. Save it to a free Famlo account to take the watermark off: the documents built from your child's school record print without it.

Save your log to a free Famlo account

The Save this to a free Famlo account box in the side column moves every entry into your child's school record. On a phone it's further down the page; Save my log, next to the watermark notice, takes you to it. The account is free.

  1. Under Your email (4), type your email address. If you already have a Famlo account, use its email and the log is added to that account.
  2. Select Email me a code (5).
  3. On the Confirm it's you screen, type the code from the email and select Continue. If the email doesn't arrive, select Send a new code.
  4. If the email is new to Famlo, finish creating your account: add your name, choose a password and agree to continue. See Signing in and creating your account for more about codes and passwords.

If you're already signed in to Famlo, selecting Email me a code skips the code and takes you straight to the next step.

Famlo holds your log for 2 days while you finish. Your browser keeps its own copy the whole time, so if the 2 days run out, open your state's page and save it again.

Add your log to a school record

Next you see Add your log to a school record, with the number of entries, the total hours and the school year they go into.

The Add your log to a school record page for 3 entries and 38.5 hours, with Max selected under Whose record is it?, the Mathematics subject for Math Circle, and Save to the school record highlightedThe Add your log to a school record page for 3 entries and 38.5 hours, with Max selected under Whose record is it?, the Mathematics subject for Math Circle, and Save to the school record highlighted
  1. Under Whose record is it?, choose your child (1). If the name you typed in the tool matches one of your children, that child is already selected.
  2. For a child who isn't in your family yet, choose Someone new (or Your child if you haven't added any children). Check the First name and pick a Grade, or leave it on Choose later. This adds the child to your family.
  3. Under What was each one?, check the subject for each entry (2). Famlo makes a first guess. An entry with no guess shows Pick a subject with an amber border.
  4. Select Save to the school record (3).

Famlo opens your child's school record with a message such as "Your log is saved: 3 entries moved into Max's record." The entries go into the current school year as your own rows, under Added by you, and you can edit them there like any other row. From now on, classes you book on Famlo add their hours on their own. See Your child's school record.

The subjects are English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, Fine Arts, Physical Education, Health, Technology and Electives. A subject is what a transcript groups hours under. If you leave an entry on Pick a subject, you can set it later in the record.

Limits

  • A log can save up to 500 entries at a time.
  • Each course or activity, and each provider, can be up to 200 characters. Anything longer is cut short.
  • One log goes to one child. Each state's page holds one log, so after you save one child's log, remove its entries before you start the next child's.

Troubleshooting

"Your log wasn't saved yet" This page explains what went wrong. Select Back to your log: your log is still in your browser.

  • "That page was open a while. Go back, reload it, and save again": reload your state's page, then save again.
  • "There's nothing in your log to save yet. Add an entry first.": add at least one entry, then save.
  • "Enter your email address and we'll send you a code.": type your email, then select Email me a code again.
  • "Enter a valid email address.", or a request to check a Gmail address: correct the address and try again.

"There's no saved log waiting to be added." Famlo shows this on your Family page when it has no log waiting for you. The log was already saved, the 2 days ran out, or you signed in on a different browser from the one where you saved. Open your state's page in the browser where you made the log and save it again.

My log is gone from the page Make sure you're on the same state's page, in the same browser and on the same device where you made it. If your browser's site data was cleared, or you used a private window, the log can't be brought back.

Some entries show up twice in the school record Saving doesn't clear the log in your browser. If you save the same log again, its entries are added again. Remove the extra rows in the school record, and use Remove in the tool for entries you've already saved.

Saving shows a blank page after several tries Saving pauses for a while after several attempts in a few minutes. Go back, wait about ten minutes, then try again. Your log is still in your browser.

The watermark is still on my printout The tool's own printout always carries the PREVIEW watermark. Once your log is saved, print from your child's school record instead. See Transcripts, diplomas and other documents.
