Letter of Intent Generator
The Letter of Intent Generator is a free tool that helps you create a customized letter of intent (or notice of intent) to homeschool your child. Each letter is tailored to your state's specific legal requirements, including the correct statute references, filing deadlines, and recipient information.
You can access the tool at homeschoolhive.co/tools/letter-of-intent.
A homeschool letter of intent is a formal written notice informing your local school district or state education authority that you plan to homeschool your child. Requirements vary by state -- some states require this notification, while others do not require any notification at all.
Select Your State
- Visit the Letter of Intent Generator.
- You will see a grid showing all 50 states. Each state is labeled as either Notification Required or No Notification Required based on current law.
- Click on your state to open the state-specific letter generator.
If your state does not require a letter of intent, the tool will let you know and explain what (if anything) your state does require to begin homeschooling.
Fill Out the Form
Once you select a state that requires notification, the letter generator form appears. Fill in the following sections:
Parent / Guardian Information
- Full Name -- Enter the full legal name of the parent or guardian filing the letter.
- Street Address -- Your home mailing address.
- City, State, ZIP -- The state field is pre-filled based on your selection.
- Phone (optional) -- A contact phone number.
- Email (optional) -- A contact email address.
Recipient Information
- Mailing Address -- Enter the address of the school district office, superintendent, or other authority your letter will be sent to. The form shows placeholder text with the correct recipient title and entity for your state (for example, "Superintendent" and "Local School District").
The recipient varies by state. Some states require you to notify the local superintendent, others require notification to the school board or state education department. The tool tells you exactly who to send it to.
Children
- Enter the name, date of birth, and grade level for each child you plan to homeschool.
- To add more children, click Add Another Child.
- To remove a child entry, click the remove button next to that child's row.
Preview Your Letter
As you fill out the form, a live Letter Preview updates in real time below the form. The preview shows:
- Your name and address
- The recipient's address
- Today's date
- A formal statement of intent referencing your state's specific statute
- Your children's names, dates of birth, and grade levels
- A closing with a signature line
Review the preview carefully to make sure all of the information is correct.
Download and Print
- Enter your email address when prompted to unlock the print-ready version of your letter.
- Click Print Letter to open your browser's print dialog.
- From the print dialog, you can either print the letter directly or save it as a PDF by choosing "Save as PDF" as your printer.
Save a PDF copy for your own records before mailing the original to your school district.
States Without a Notification Requirement
If you select a state that does not require a formal letter of intent, the tool will display:
- A confirmation that no notification is required, along with the relevant statute reference.
- An explanation of what your state does require (if anything) to begin homeschooling.
- If applicable, an optional school withdrawal letter you can generate as a courtesy when pulling your child out of a traditional school.
